| Hey guys, I'm training to be a RLSH, but I'm not ready yet. I'm going to be in the mid to southern Florida area, where it's hot, so what kind of armor should I wear? I know Kevlar doesn't work when it's wet, and there are a lot of storms, so I plan on keeping water retardant spray on me. I've heard boron armor is lightweight and durable, so that's definitely an option. Thanks! | |

| Every environment offers it's own dangers. Dress for the local place.
Where I live, there is an excessive amount of UV light (Australia in general recieves 20% more solar radiation than other countries. The shadows are darker, the contrast between light and shade is higher. It kind of inspired me taking this "nom du héros", Shade. Shade is shelter during the hot day. Shade stops people getting sunburnt. It has positive connotations.)
Another consideration on top of radiation is legality. After Martin Bryant's terrible massacre at the Port Arthur historical site, the then-government organised a wide-scale buyback of guns, tightening of gun laws and gun license provisions.
The implications are this law are that, firstly, I am unlikely to have to deal with someone who is not a cop, a security guard, a member of a shooters club willing to forever lose their license and gun(s) or a bikie waving a gun in my direction. If I did, they're probably a moron who bought a piece of the black market, and whether it will actually fire at all or just blow up and take the kid's hand off is anyone's guess. I'm not going to annoy the cops or bank security, Bikies only shoot people who live in their world, few shooters will ever want to give up everything including their freedom just to blow me away... that leaves that 1 in 100 chance of the moron, and I'm banking on them not even knowing how to hold "their gat" appropriately, let alone had practice, let alone knew enough to check there was a firing pin.
By the same token, materials such as kevlar and goldflex are only owned by people who need them for work (cops, armoured car escorts, diplomats & other Federal Police escorts). To breach this law is to suffer the same penalty as an unlicensed firearm.
Still, there are alternatives. I'm experimenting with two roughly different setups, based on legal and publicly available attire.
Outfit 1: Dark cotton weave top, hockey shin guards on my forearms, denim jeans.
Outfit 2: Slorider motorcycle jacket with arm inserts, denim jeans.
Both outfits offer me excellent mobility, with light armour in my forearms and elbows to help me block harder blows. Both breathe pretty well and both can take a bit of abrasion (although the jacket far outstrips the cotton in that regard).
Fire is a weakness at this stage, unless I can figure out how to coat the jacket in a flame-retardant layer. I'm also pondering further sports equipment for armour padding. Their composition of a harder outer layer and soft padded lining makes for excellent armour against crushing impacts and edged weapons, and most folks around here fight with fists or the occasional knife.
The biggest problem is a growing trend nationally. They used to call it a "king hit" - rabbit-punching a bloke from behind, right in the back of the head. People have died because (and you'll have to forgive my anger) some weak, cowardly, spineless, drunken DOG of a man has punched a completely unaware and innocent person and sent them, unconscious, to a second skull-shattering impact on the ground, into brain damage. We call it a "coward's punch" now, and tougher laws are being introduced state by state. I have to figure out a way to detect and/or stop someone doing that when I don't even see it coming.
Even Indiana Jones used to tap Nazis on the shoulder before he hit them. He gave Nazis a chance. Nazis. What has become of our young men? | |

| Never heard of boron armor. UHMM something something is the kevlar alternative, it's not affected by water. Gets hot though. | |
