As a former boxer I can safely say that in a carefully refereed fight , with strict rules , 3 miunite rounds , where you know who you are going to fight , you know intimate details about how he fights , you've been training 70 hours a week for that one fight and you will probibly be punched in the face hundreds of times . Damn straight being clean shaven will make a difference . Not much of one but when 2 closely matched men box a small thing like that can make a difference . That's why I can't ever remember seeing a fighter with a full beard .
On the streets however if you are punched in the face a dozen times it means the fighter is better than you and without the gloves or a ref to break it up he could prolly kill you . The beard friction wouldn't make any difference . No offense taken. This is actually a great point, and one that I had not considered. See, I never figured that these boxers I knew might be doing it just for the fact that they were fighting in a controlled environment, as you described.

| Wow. We are suddenly discussing our shaving habits.
Deeply disturbing. | |

| The only reason I'd shave is sometimes my facial hair is irritated by my mask. Otherwise, I don't bother. Radnor has a very distinctive bear that sometimes makes it very difficult to go around without his mask on. Its very, very apparent. | |

Deeply disturbing. I think we're safe as long as we only talk about shaving our faces.

The deeply disturbing part is, ...he shaves mine too.

| Why worry about shaving and ingrown hairs, that's what battle masks are for.
Seriously.

Me too! If someone is close enough to punch you, wouldn't it also be an issue that they could just grab your beard and pull? I would think that'd be a bit painful? I might have to try this out on my brother when he grows his beard out again... ~Rogue

| Hairs that are much less than an inch long don't work for pulling. A big Rip Van Winkle beard would be a liability that way, though. | |
