Parkour

Does anyone practice parkour? I'd love to get into it but everything in my town is too spread out, when i venture to NYC or Boston its much better to find a suitable route.

not practical in chicago. i mean yea i dabble and yea it helps in some cases. but finding a practical use for it is rare.

I've found parkour practical in Austin, New Orleans, Kansas City and all over New York, especially Brooklyn and the Bronx. Parkour is really 2 things in one, a practical discipline and a way to show off stunts and tricks. The practical parkour has been used by firefighters to traverse a complex or changing environment one would experience in a fire. I've found it useful for quick escapes, surveillance, exploration and just plain good exercise.

If you want to learn, I suggest getting started on serious upper body strength, learning parkour lingo, and looking up tutorials for the moves you want to learn on YouTube. I learned everything I know about parkour from YouTube tutorials.

Video tutes are the best way to learn anything. I would do the Parkour thing, but I would probably die if I ran more than four feet.

If you're unable to run 4 feet, combating violent crime might not be the best career choice for you.

I was more of a white collar criminal combatant. They can't run either.

I don't have the knees or coordination for parkour. You know those blooper videos where you see endless teenagers crotching themsleves attempting tricks on bikes and skateboards and whatnot? That would be me free-running.

There are different types of mercenaries. I wasn't the run around shooting at people type. I was more of the take the side of whoever pays best information broker type. I'm a high quality lover, not a fighter.

I can probably do some, but I rarely get the chance to use it in any environment where it would be useful. It's a shame. But I ignore the pointless flips...or is that something else?

It is something else. You're thinking of Free Running, that's a sport similar to parkour but with a different mentality and purpose, and it involves doing lots of tricks and whatnot. Parkour is the art of getting from A to B as fast as humanly possible.

No sir. Parkour has absolutely zero tricks. It is not something that one practices for fun, that's what Freerunning is for.

Is there any legal things about doing Parkour in places?

I would just be sure you don't trespass on property to do it, or use public buildings to practice if medical liability falls to the property owners.

It seems there's a lot of confusion over the difference. Some people tell you freerunnig is the flippy one, otehrs say parkour. Oh well.
Reagrding the legality; If you're on someone's property, I'd say get out of there fast. Isn't that what parkour is about..?

Free running evolved from parkour, so it's not surprising there is confusion. Free running is the flippy one.

If you're interested in learning parkour, you'll need very serious conditioning to learn quickly. I've found the video below to be a good overview of exercises to achieve that conditioning.
