Overall power exercise, improves back strength, traps, forearms/grip and hamstrings
My grip improved a lot just from them
They're considered one of the 'big 3' for powerlifting moves, the others being squat and bench I always include all 3in

Dead lifts are supposed to be for hamstrings and glutes
but the glutes attach much too diagonally for Dead Lifts to get them.
Many weight-lifting exercises are REALLY neanderthal
like "military press".
It does no specific muscle correctly.
It is just "pressing heavy thing above head!"
Dead lifts are kinda like that.
I don't do them but I do plenty of other things for the legs, glutes and back
