Increased flexibility and coping with stress related tension. Also it kind of hurts and feels good at the same time...not to sound like a sicko!

People who need to be flexible do not do Yoga because it is so much less

than able-to-deliver.

Stress is either positive or negative.

If you have negative stress, yoga will not eliminate it's sourse.

When you do cardio daily, you don't have left-over energy.

Snow-shoveling, for example, will turn you into a person who does not have

stress-related tension at the end of the day.

Hurting-and-feeling-good-at-the-same-time, raises other questions.

The shortest way that I can say all the info you need is:

tightness (of muscles ) is secondary to weakness of muslces.

Motion can reveal the tightness but, if five muslces are to do a job,

stylish motion will not tell you exactly which muscles are compensating

for "who" out of the five are not doing their job.

I was told to look into Thelemic practices. From there, because Crowley actually visited India and studied these methods of spiritual governance, one is due to gain a more "rich" and "full" understanding of the art.

Well, I suppose I have a bit of a story tell so get comfy!

In 1996 I was sent to Al Jaber Kuwait. I arrived to find essentially a small village made of tents. As usual it was intensely hot there and morale was low. The conditions were not ideal and people were feeling it. At the time I thought people didn't like me very much because I was the new guy but in retrospect I think everybody was just slow cooking in the heat and miserable.

The tent I was assigned to was a bit nicer than some. Somebody before me had erected 'walls' made of plywood and the tents were air conditioned (thank God). Outside the tent it was 130 degrees Fahrenheit, inside it was only about 95 degrees.

My three month deployment turned into a six month deployment when terrorists bombed Khobar Towers in Dhahran. 19 of my fellow airmen died. I had been living at Khobar Towers the year before in the very building that was destroyed, had I been there I would be dead.

We were elevated to threat condition delta. That means that you have to wear a flack vest and helmet. It was kind of like wearing a winter coat in the hottest summer you can imagine. Long hours spent waiting and missing home. By the end of the day my DCU uniform would have salt stains all over it from my sweat. My back would ache from wearing that armor all day.

We had a hardened structure that was outfitted for R and R. It had a TV, a little snack counter, and shelf with old paperback books. One day I found a yoga book sitting there. It was an old one, probably written in the 70's. I decided to give it a try. I spent the remainder of my time in Kuwait doing the exercises in the book in my spare time.

I don’t profess to be an authority on yoga. But I can tell you that it helped me get through a difficult chapter in my life. I enjoy it and I respect it.

A person who had never heard of Yoga might have used Kata to get through.

I've seen people do their ballet barre work to get through

and

I've seen people use Tai Chi or crochet.

Any non-work physical activity of a low level is what does the help.

Bones change due to pressure put upon them.

Please, picture good posture in your mind and understand why I am telling you to NEVER do the shoulder stand.

I did yoga for 18 years and ruined many parts of me.

Yoga has a seductive sales pitch and promises things that it, simply,

cannot deliver.

Thank you for your service to our country!

You mean it won't deliver an attractive 50 year old blonde in a skimpy unitard while rolling on a giant ball to my living room?

Damn... (Right about now, FloVA is glad she took that pic of her abs off the board)

Really, I found that I can't bend the way Yoga wants me to.

Weights, pushups, situps, cutting out the sugars and starches, proper diet and a determined mindset are good old fashioned staples to a healthy body.
Now, if I weren't nuts...

WATCHING is not what yoga is for.

Wink

Martial Arts were born at the same time

and

are, very, paralelle.

Flexibility is genetic, not age- or training-related.

For all other things involded in living three times as along as our ancestors,

muscles, keeping bones strong and body active,

are the number-one player.

Yoga cannot deliver what resistance training can.

Yoga was written by men for men.

All of whom thought that earth is flat, women should be burned, alive,

when the husband dies ( still practiced in remote parts of India)

had sevants who had servants.

They were carried on litters, did not brush their own hair, cut their own food

or carry around and hurse their own children.

Yoga was the ONLY thing that they did all day

@Flora: As far as what one "will do" once they "understand the art", the best that I can imagine at this time is that they will have a fuller understanding of why certain aspects of the art exist the way they do.

I imagine that there is much more to this (involving having a clearer and more detached perception of "the self"), but as I am still a mere 'student of the arts' myself, I cannot be fully certain at the time what type of enlightenment ultimately achieved. --My safe bet is that it depends on what the individual is willing to open themselves up to.

No doubt this path of Mastery exists in all forms of Martial Arts (even though Yoga isn't really a "Martial" Art).

BTW, out of curiosity...what is your mind on Ayurvedic studies?

Has the practice crossed your path at all at any given point? cat

Cheers and thanks again for your input,

After 35 years of studying yoga,

many national debates in the news, on Radio and in magazines,

and

with my extensive study of exercise and

28 years of martial arts and many more of dance,

I can answer you definitively.

I only answer RLSH for free because of what we do.

Information from experts costs money.

I state this before I answer because I do not have a lot of

time to type up answer for you in detail when YOU could spend the

same amount of money and time that I spent.

I will give you plain answers. Not details.

Hi Flora,

I will stick to my Tai Chi, your exercises and my cycling (with perhaps some Ayurveda thrown in).

Good to hear! Keep up the good work. Smile

I should pick up some kind of mileage tracker for my bike. I must've done at least 100k by now.

Not sure what you are speaking of. I don't eat seafood (nor do I "eat" every food I "see").
