Best type of martial arts for a RLSH?

I hope you did not take my comments as offensive, RN. They were in no way intended to reflect upon you or your training. I have been practicing martial arts for over 20 years, and I have respect for anyone who trains, regardless of how long they've been at it. At the same time, I do not expect non-martial artists to "get it", and think that martial artists who take their training too seriously have missed the boat, so to speak. Some formality in the dojo is necessary, but I take the belt off when I leave the office...again, so to speak.

And I submit a rousing "here here!" to Gauge. Prevention is key to much in life.

Of course, this is from The Art of War. I find it very appropriate to what many of us do as rlsh. It would be ideal if, in as many cases as possible, we could be proactive in our approach, and recognize the potential for a situation to become violent. Better to intervene to diffuse a tense situation than break up a fight. Better to escort a lady to her car than to beat up the mugger. This sin't exactly what the quote means, but it's what I think about.

I got called to teach THREE WHOLE classes to two young children at their home.
(??????????????????????)
VERY odd.
I did not have time to change clothes.
So, I taught in my landscaping overalls ( Farmer Flora )
in their back yard ( with massive amounts of bug spray ).

Mom and gramma were there and left us in the back yard.

WOT THE ECK can I teach these childs!??!?!?!?!!?

I taught them to always change the subject to food
( teaching them to subdue without fighting)
and I taught them the roll-off ( Aikido )
Then, I had them teach it all back to me so that I could make sure
that the stuff was in their heads.

I took $75 per class.

not at all. Actually was thinking of soneone I know who literally did that whole "ki-yah" mock I described, drunk, while telling me he used to study aikido(not fucking likely). it's people like that I mean, not you or anyone here. I'm not overly serious about it, but I value the training highly. I want to be good at it, and I will be..still, I keeps my pie hole shut about it.

I understand. I had an ex-girlfriend (emphasis on EX) who would ridicule me often for studying MA. She was jealous that I trained every day and had some female students. So....she burned all of my class notes. 1st kyu through 3rd dan. gone. Luckily, and unbeknownst to her, I had extra copies. Disaster narrowly adverted! I think that some people just do not get it. No surprise, I suppose, seeing how the MA are represented in the movies and TV. Although there can be some exceptions. Find what works for you. It took me a while to find styles that I really took to. I stick with wing chun, muay thai, judo, and wrestling. It took 13 years before I found what I liked though. I love the physicality and the art behind martial arts so it's always a fun process for me, personally.

Thanks, Flora. Things worked out for the best, though. Luckily, my wife enjoys MA, too.

ATM I'm studying street fighting and trying to mold aikido inspired by keysi, judo and muay thai into somthing that works for me. After looking at some SF theory, aikido principles seem like a logical base for it. But that's theory...

Hope I'll never find out if it works or not.

I wasn't totally impressed w/ Miller's book, but I do appreciate this commentary.

The problem, I think, is three-fold: First, techniques must be taught and they should be taught safely and incrementally. Building up to a live fight in varying contexts is important, and it can be done in a way that is safe. Clearly, there is no substitute for for the real thing and no way to prepare for it fully. But you have to do something, and without a safe environment learning becomes problematic. Miller assumes that slow, technical punches never evolve into feints, jabs, haymakers, and body slams. Mind you, some schools probably never make that transition, but many do.

Second, and related to this point, is the litigation factor. Safety is paramount because the potential for law suits are ever present in martial arts and combat training.

Third, it is foolish to reduce combatives and MA to survival skills. That is mercenary thinking and, while it wields some utility, it has it's own set of drawbacks. There are limits to, and costs for, this sort of pragmatism. That being said, Miller's (and this commentator's) point is well taken. Anyone in the MA who thinks what they are doing resembles a real fight, the kind that could threaten your life, is kidding themselves. But let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

I really enjoy reading your typing.

I started learning MA at age 21.
I had years of dance that had to be completely dismantled
to allow the new knowledge in.
It was not easy and it took a long time.

Now, I can't get it back out.
If I throw a inward elbow, odds are very high that I will also
throw a chop.

The trained reflexes are in there now
and they didn't get build in fights.
Heavy repitition
puts the moves into you .


If you can control them when needed at fulll adreneline
with no prep, then, you are no longer a white belt


Yes, training can be achieved in class.
Yes, street fighting is rather different.
Yes, no one is born knowing.
EVERYONE has to train to know

It's ugly, but that's what it's about.

The video makes sense to me, though it's mostly asking questions. I've never read the book.

I don't understand why people feel like martial arts classes need to address anything beyond how to fight. If you went to a shooting class they'd teach you how to shoot -- it doesn't seem crassly mercenary to me... it seems like studying the subject at hand.

Would you take life advice from your teacher in a figure drawing class or would you expect to practice figure drawing?

I mean take good advice from anyone, sure, but this is a situation where people just generally accept there's an obligation to give out the advice and an obligation to view it as sacred. Ultimately it probably has its origins in the roles of teachers in Chinese society (and other Asian countries). I guess, anyway.

I'm talking with a guy who teaches jujitsu around here... he hasn't offered me any sacred advice, but he does keep talking about how fast I can get various belts. It's a little irritating because I tried to explain my interest to him, but it's like he didn't even hear me. I was pretty sure I'd go with his school, but meeting face to face now I'm looking at other possibilities.

the thing about martial arts is that when it comes to fighting a dick with a baseball bat you kinda have to go abouve and beyond your normal everyday martial arts. part of the reason i spend time learning how to use random items like an umbrella or wallet chains or even a chinese fan as a weapon is because it will give you the element of surprise and the advantage of a weapon. by reenforceing and wheing an umbrella, adding metal inserts in to a fan, and knowing how to strike a target 5 times in 2 seaconds with a chain spining at a centrefugal velocity of over 20 mps. you have just made a weapon that isnt considered by society or law to be a weapon. and one that only you know how to use

..and you still never get to hit as hard during practice as you do if you
do landscaping.

beleve it or not thats basicaly how i use it, tho sometimes i hold it in the center and use bolth ends to strike. they did that scene in fast forward tho i can tell you that. still a decent display

Matrial arts is to fighting what the shooting range is to warfare. It helps, but you're gonna need some field drills as well. And the real deal ain't nothing like the drills. To survive you'll need to access the killer instinct.

Anything that you purpose to use as a weapon will be considered such by the law. For instance, a car is not designed to be a weapon, but if you run someone over on purpose, it will in all legal consideration be labeled as a weapon. Likewise for a wallet chain, Coke bottle, or Beanie Baby.

that is verry true, however most criminals in chicago use either knifes shanks or skivs if not guns. the reason i choose to master everyday normaly harmles items is that if they are going to arrest me for useing a weapon in self defence, i can be guaranteed that the criminal is in for worse than me
