Speaking from my own experience, and having trained in some internal styles as well, it takes a very, very, very long time to learn to use ki/chi effectively in combat. One of the reasons I think external systems are best for RLSH is because they do not require decades of practice to gain competency. My training involved Gyokko Ryu, Assayama Ichiden Ryu, and Takagi Yoshin Ryu--among others--but these systems were developed to enable people to quickly and very effectively learn to assess a situation and defend themselves and others. I have great respect for internal stylists and, indeed, the ryu I've listed here also incorporate internal techniques in advanced training, but for most intents and purposes external styles are more efficient and certainly get the job done.

but yeah..... many apologies for the tangent. I'm an internal guy, I think it's from being so close to nature all the time.

YAY for being close to nature!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Flora- Ha! That seems like an awful lot to ask of somebody, though! Was that a mandatory part of your training?! Smile

I agree, spent 8 months homeless in Philadelphia when I was 19 through 20, and let me tell you, you learn a lot about life, energy, and especially cruelty from people in the world. It is no joke, and it is a living hell sometimes, but learning how to center, and focus your energy helps keep the mind stable and your body.

I study Seven-Star Praying Mantis, Bujinkan Tora-Bora Ninjutsu, and Green Beret training. Of all of them, the simplest one I've come across is the Green Beret unarmed combat training: it's basically learning the weak spots on the body, and the easiest way to attack them.

I've got various Shaolin forms manuals but I've done more focus on adapting some of the forms into what I am capable of already than mastering any particular form.

@RN- My ninjutsu/jujutsu background is with Genbukan (and a very brief stint w/ Bujinkan). I am curious to know how the Jinenkan differs from Tanemura's approach. A quick google search reveals that it may have to do with a focus on the "basics", but having trained with Tanemura sensei I can honestly say that he repeatedly emphasized the need to focus on the basics. Just curious what your perspective is on the matter.

I did about 2 months of bujinkan last year..had to stop for 1) financial reasons, and 2) wasn't fond of the people I was training with. I've just started with jinenkan, so experience is limited. I can say that basics are something my sensei stresses, he really wants us to have a strong foundation on which to build the more advanced techniques. He's also good about teaching in a way that you see the real-world application. we work with 6-foot staff and sword, but also knives, etc. my last class, we spent some time learning how to control a knife, whether an assailant had it and was coming at you, or, you had it, and the assailant was trying to disarm you.

from the jinenkan.org site(you have probably seen this)

Jinenkan means "Hall of Nature" and represents Unsui Sensei's feeling of his martial arts being like the natural flow of the elements... Just as the wind can pass around any obstacle and leave no trace, or alternately can destroy anything in its path.

In my limited time with the art, I feel this is an accurate description.

I'm personally convinced at this point that "cardio" is universally the best martial art out there for us. Not exactly a titan in that regard, but I'm working on it.

I think this should be moderated or locked. It's a silly discussion as well, best MA discussions somehow end up with arguments like "my mommy is strongers than yours" and stuff.

And it will be a local thing as well. I can't use any weapons, and MA make my body legaly a lethal weapon, so the best thing for me would be to know nothing and just hit 'em till they drop. To late for that.

Did i ever tell you that I used to teach Step in the gym at DLI?

I was older than every one even back then

The room has hard rubber floors and three-stories-high windows looking out on the forest

We had no weights for group ex.
I bought large rubber bands at the office supply store
and
we used to take gallon jugs to the rest room and fill them to make 8 pound weights
and
we made a mess

You said it.
I have miles to go before I sleep on this one. It's a major focus this Winter for me, that and getting my hand/arm speed back, and getting them tough again pounding the bags.

Yes. I dented a couple in, the old fashioned ones where they were heavy aluminum (i believe) all metal, no plastic light up front crap.

If I tried that now, I'd probably feel it a lot more. Middle age is approaching rapidly.

Although I have training, threads like this remind me of a quote from Sun Tzu.

"To win 100 victories in 100 battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill."

Of course, this is from The Art of War. I find it very appropriate to what many of us do as rlsh. It would be ideal if, in as many cases as possible, we could be proactive in our approach, and recognize the potential for a situation to become violent. Better to intervene to diffuse a tense situation than break up a fight. Better to escort a lady to her car than to beat up the mugger. This sin't exactly what the quote means, but it's what I think about.

I don't know if it should be locked, but I agree about MA discussions going silly. there's something about discussing MA with people that really brings out the mockery. Any time I've ever discussed studying MA with anyone not studying themselves it devolved into them doing the whole waving their arms around and going "Ki-Yah!!" mockery that is so disrespectful to those of us who take it seriously. I'm sharing a place with people right now, they know I study, and I wish they didn't.(they, of course, DON'T know about my interest in RLSH). Nowadays, I don't bring MA up. At all.
